How do pineapples grow?

How do pineapples grow? On my last foray through the garden center, I discovered a pineapple plant and asked myself how does pineapple grow?

I was thrilled with the plant, and it struck me at that very moment that I hadn’t given any thought to how the delicious tropical fruits grow. Or have you ever wondered how pineapples grow? You can find the delicious fruit with its green wreath of leaves on the fruit shelf without reference to how it develops. Then in the garden center, there was the wow factor. And, of course, I don’t want to withhold that from you.

How do pineapples grow?

The pineapple comes from the bromeliad family. It has its origin in America. Nowadays, however, it is cultivated in most tropical countries. The fruit grows on a stem. Outside there are long, narrow, and pointed leaves. The leaves look something like the leaves that grow on top of the fruit. They’re just a lot longer and thinner. The plant is evergreen and perennial, and it has roots in the soil. It multiplies through side shoots.

In the middle of the pineapple plant, many small purple flowers are formed on the vegetation trunk. These grow together to form a single fruit – the pineapple. When the flowers have faded, the fruit begins to grow. It takes a long time to harvest a pineapple. This can take 1 to 2 years before a ripe fruit can gather.

Pineapple plants are pretty straightforward to grow. The soil can be both peaty and sandy. It just does not allow forming waterlogging. The plant can withstand heat and drought very well. However, the plant does not like temperatures below 15 degrees!

Pulling pineapple yourself – is that possible?

Since pineapple is a tropical fruit, it needs a lot of warmth. But you can also dare to try it yourself in our latitudes and grow pineapples yourself. However, you have to pay attention to the right temperature all year round. Do you want to try that out? I found very nicely described instructions on how to grow a pineapple plant from a pineapple and – with a bit of luck – to harvest a new pineapple at some point.
